About

I have always enjoyed crafting and building things. As an 9 year old girl, I sold hand-made jewelry and hair clips at my local community arts fair. Creating (and fixing) various things - jewelry, quilts, bookshelves, leaky pipes - have always given me great pleasure and sense of accomplishment. Crafting was something I enjoyed on the side while I was pursing my musicology degrees - BA, MA and PhD.

The idea for Katerina Design Co was born after the birth of my son, when I became a stay at home mom and and began looking for a creative way to support my family. I started teaching myself how to make designs using my iPad and Adobe Illustrator.

As a child of Russian immigrants who fled communism, I grew up in a home steeped in Slavic art, language, culture, and the Russian Orthodox faith. My mother filled our home traditional folk art - gzhel, khokhloma, palekh, zhestovo - and she herself loved painting Russian folk art designs in her spare time.

Orthodoxy has also been a source of inspiration for me. The beauty of the Orthodox faith, church, and music inspire me on a deep, spiritual level. Dostoevsky's idea that "beauty will save the world" has long resonated for me. Beauty, in its many forms, reminds me of the beauty of God and Christ's love for us.

My hope is that the products in this shop bring a reflection of that beauty in your everyday life.
